Taipei International Book Exhibition (TIBE) is one of the most important event of the kind organised in Asia. It takes place between January 31 and February 5. During the last edition in 2019, TIBE was visited by 580 000 people and hosted 735 exhibitors from 52 countries. The exhibition is targeted mostly at readers, less so at publishers or literary agents, which is why the focus will be on meetings with authors, cultural events, and book sales. The main organiser of the Polish pavilion is the Polish Book Institute in partnership with the Adam Mickiewicz Institute and the Polish Office in Taipei.
Writers Andrzej Sapkowski, Witold Szabłowski and Stanisław Łubieński will meet with the Taiwanese audience, Polish poetry will be represented by Marzanna Bogumiła Kielar, and comics by Bartosz Sztybor. The Adam Mickiewicz Institute will invite the participants to an exposition titled Captains of Illustration from Poland and two concerts by the band Dagadana. The public will get to know the long and rich history of Polish children’s literature and the of illustration, which was at the peak of its development between the 1950s and the 1980s. The showcased works have been created by artists active during in so-called ‘golden age’ of Polish illustration, that is, in the 60s and 70s, as well as by contemporary artists.
The exhibited illustrations come from a book titled Captains of Illustration: 100 years of Children’s Books from Poland, published in 2019 by the Adam Mickiewicz Institute. It contains over 800 illustrations created by more than 200 Polish artists, including Janusz Towpik, Marianna Oklejak, Bożena Truchanowska, and Piotr Socha, representing 100 years of the history of Polish children’s illustration. What complements the images are texts authored by prominent theoreticians and enthusiasts of Polish children’s book design. This comprehensive publication is a result of a cooperation with the popular and award-winning Two Sisters Publishing House. The exhibition is curated by Professor Jacek Friedrich.

On the opening day of the Taipei International Book Exhibition, and then on February 4, the audience will have the opportunity to attend a Dagadana concert. For 14 years, the musicians have been combining jazz, electronic music and world music with elements of Polish and Ukrainian culture, and their work transgresses the boundaries between nations, as well as those between the stage and the audience. In 2019, Dagadana was the only Polish/Ukrainian band to perform at the famous Glastonbury Festival.
