Sailor, a visual supplement to the novel of the same title is the full-length debut of artist Norman Leto. It premiered in 2010 during the Era New Horizons international film festival in Wrocław. Its international premiere took place during the Bradford International Film Festival in East Yorkshire in March 2011 and it was later screened in Marseille as part of the 22nd international documentary film festival.
There is a "plot" of sorts directing the film centred around an egotistical physics tutor, and chiefly comprises three extended, illustrated lectures on various sociological, philosophical and anthropological issues. What gradually emerges is a provocative, disturbing portrait of its enigmatic narrator (Leto): an egotistical, politically incorrect, misanthropic academic and his torrid romantic entanglements - an anti-hero who may or may not be a skewed alter ego of "sailor's" one-man-band of a writer/director/producer/editor/cinematographer. The dialogues betwen the narrator and his girlfriend are aggressive, entirely robbed of political corrrectness. The visual landscape of the film is enthralling, taken up in an abstract space of computer logarithms and floating icebergs of some barren territory at the poles. The result is a multilayered panoramic experience of real life and theoretical discourse of existential matters.
Norman Leto was born Łukasz Banach in 1980 in Bochnia. As a self-taught multi-media artist, he is among the most significant contemporary artists in Poland today.
