14-year-old Tadek has no parents. He lives with his older sister in a shabby house in a "bad" neighbourhood. But for Tadek the sister is not so much a mother as an object of sexual desire. It is this secret passion which becomes the main focus of the story. But it is also a tale of Tadek's friendship with a neighbour girl and his uneasy contacts with the sister's boorish fiancé, of whom he is jealous. Everyone here is longing for something, seeking love or acceptance. Everyone is struggling to be noticed by the others. And the stakes are high - it is a game for love. Like in all melodramas.
"The energy of the story about one's maturing and sexual initiation does not stem from the mere fact that it is outstandingly told and played. Such melodramas as the one narrated by Marczewski could well take place not in the suburbs of Warsaw, but in London, Rome or Moscow. And they surely do." (Lech Kurpiewski, "Newsweek")
