Zofia Posmysz is a Polish journalist, novelist and author. She was a resistance fighter during World War II and survived a total of three years of imprisonment at the Auschwitz and Ravensbrück concentration camps.
Her novel The Passenger (1959) was one of the first literary portrayals of concentration camp realities. The Passenger has been published in 16 languages. A film version was released in 1962 by Andrzej Munk. In 1968, the first opera version of the novel appeared in the former Soviet Union (libretto by Yuri Lukin and Aleksander Medvedev, with music by Mieczysław Weinberg).
