Mead, a traditional drink made by fermenting honey with water, holds an important place in Polish culture. It was the most revered alcoholic beverage in the Middle Ages, consumed on special occasions and festivities, long before a certain clear spirit established itself at the country's most well-known drink.
But in recent years the delicious yellow alcohol is making a comeback. The family-run meadery Miodosytnia Podlaska in the beautiful Podlachia region, specialises in fruit mead, with the addition of aromatic bison grass (sweet grass) - favourite food of the European bison (Żubr) that gives the grass its name.
Owner Dawid Olesiuk explains how his mead is made, while his father Piotr reveals the secrets of the colony of honey bees next door.
