Sir Neville Marriner, the principal conductor for the I, CULTURE Orchestra, speaks about his experiences working with a youth orchestra made up of musicians from Central and Eastern Europe
I, CULTURE Orchestra represents the official orchestra of the 2011 Polish EU Presidency. The endeavor was launched by the Adam Mickiewicz Institute and aims to follow the example of such renowned ensembles as the European Union Youth Orchestra and the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra. It provides musical opportunity to young musicians in the Eastern European nations of Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldavia and the Ukraine.
Sir Marriner states:
To begin with, you noticed that they come from different styles, different educations, different pitches - of course the instruments came from different countries. But they so quickly became an ensemble that it was most impressive.
