In Losing Sonia, Franczak’s documentary, a rigid monastery proves to be a place full of life, beauty and artistic expression thanks to the dedication of the young nun Sonia, who paints icons. Sonia owns a dog, cats and exotic birds, works at night and sleeps until noon. Trying to understand the nun’s decision to join the convent in Gdzie Jest Sonia? / Losing Sonia, the filmmaker discovers her family history, marked by Russian history. Through this family narrative, the film depicts the story of the Greek Orthodox church and contemporary Russia's renaissance of deep spirituality.
