Vistula Sunken Treasures ("Uratowane z Potopu") is a new documentary in the making (premiere: 2016) about a huge bounty of lost sculptures rediscovered 350 years later on the bottom of the Vistula River. Culture.pl takes a look at what the new film has in store.
During a three-year expedition organised by the University of Warsaw, the positions of sunken barges were discovered based on historical sources. A group of scientists led by Hubert Kowalski PhD, together with the filmmakers Marcin Jamkowski and Konstanty Kulik, found over 100 precious architectural elements amongst the wrecks. These newly-found treasures are the only remnants left of Warsaw’s 17th-century architecture, and will soon be joining the Museum of Warsaw’s public collection.
Vistula Sunken Treasures is a creative documentary about a journey to the past, filled with adventures imbued with the myth of sunken treasure. Thanks to 2D animation and canny production, modern camerawork and interviews with those who made it happen, the film immerses the viewer in a story of hidden treasure – a treasure which has a lot to tell us.
