The National Museum in Warsaw has uncovered anew a striking chapter in Polish press photography through the images of four iconic figures of the 1950s and '60s
The photographs in the show are drawn from the archives of ŚWIAT (World) magazine, a publication modeled in part on its American counterpart LIFE and inspired by Cartier-Bresson's concept of the "Decisive Moment". Everyday life in Poland and other countries is brilliantly captured by the founders of the Polish school of reportage photography - Konstanty Jarochowski, Wiesław Prażuch, Jan Kosidowski and Władysław Sławny - the man who established ŚWIAT and served as its publisher for the duration of its existence (1951-1969). The exhibition includes both photographs published in the magazine and those that didn't manage to pass censure at the time, characterised by a dynamic approach to the subject and a drive to capture situations or events as they unfolded.
Cztery razy ŚWIAT / Four Times around the World is on at the National Museum in Warsaw between the 22nd of February - 12th of May 2013. For more information, see: www.mnw.art.pl
