Warsaw Summer Jazz Days is one of the most important jazz festivals in Poland. It was initiated by Mariusz Adamiak, the originator of Jazz Radio, Jazz á go-go magazine, and many other initiatives promoting jazz music in Poland. From its first edition, the festival has attracted the greatest stars of jazz, like John McLaughlin, Chick Corea, Kenny Wheeler, Ralph Towner or Garry Peacock. It was Warsaw Sumer Jazz Days that popularized the work of John Zorn, Pat Metheny and other icons of American improvised music not just in Poland, but also across Central Europe.
The concerts take place in the Congress Hall of the Palace of Culture & Science in Warsaw, which can contain over 2,500 spectators. In 2002 the open-air edition of WSJD in Old Town gathered a record number of 15,000 jazz fans.
Among the renowned jazz musicians who appeared at Warsaw Summer Jazz Days were: John Zorn, Joe Zawinul, Marcus Miller, Pharoah Sanders, Vernon Reid, John McLaughlin, Chick Corea, Steps Ahead, Joe Pass, Steve Coleman, Modern Jazz Quartet, Al Jarreau, Al Di Meola, Herbie Hancock, Bela Fleck, Dave Holland, Candy Dulfer, Gil Evans Orchestra, Joshua Redman, Pat Metheny, Bill Laswell, James Carter, Michael Brecker, Bobby McFerrin, James Blood Ulmer, Ronald Shannon Jackson, Branford Marsalis, Wayne Shorter and Maria Schneider.
