The Museum, established in 1967, has its premises in a restored classicist house, the birthplace of Maria Sklodowska (1867-1934), the physicist and chemist, co-founder of the radiation science and author of pioneering works in nuclear physics and chemistry.
Married to Pierre Curie, Maria Sklodowska-Curie was a two-time winner of the Nobel Prize: first in 1903, jointly with Pierre, in physics; then in 1911, individually, in chemistry, for her research on the physical and chemical properties of polonium and radium and for work on the methods of isolating, purifying and measuring the activity of radioactive elements.
The core of the Museum's holdings is made up of iconographic stuff such as photographs, documents and correspondence, and of Maria Sklodowska-Curie's personal effects, such as her glasses, cup, ink bottle, books, coat, purse, letters, notes, etc. There are also other exhibits related to the scientist, such as medals, post stamps, occasional envelopes, paintings and sculptures, all of which celebrate her scientific achievement and contribution to the advancement of chemistry and nuclear physics, the part she played in the Polish public and intellectual life, and the history of her family. The Museum also preserves materials relevant to Polish chemists, such as photographs, letters, documents, distinctions, scientific papers, as well as conducts a range of activities in the field of information and education.
