The house in which Jan Matejko, Poland's most prominent representative of historical painting, was born, lived and died, became his museum within a few years from his death, and has been a Division of the National Museum in Cracow since 1904.
Evoking a home-like atmosphere, the authentic furnishings and decoration of Matejko's house are a definite strength of the exhibition. In addition to Matejko's oils, watercolours and drawings as well as to the works presented to the painter by his students, the house is filled with original furniture, various kinds of daily use objects, decorative items, personal effects (spectacles, a walking stick), old family photographs as well as a rich collection of decorative arts, sculpture, armours, weapons, textiles and costumes from different periods and various areas of Europe, the Near and the Far East. The collection reflects on Matejko's collecting passion, at the same time revealing the secrets of his workshop. He used the collected artefacts in his work on historical paintings, and was particularly discriminating in the choice of historical costume. Indeed, Matejko was the painter of The Polish Costume from 1200 to 1795 charts and designed some of the garments and accessories. This is why costume has been assigned a special place within the Museum. The rooms not used to exhibit Matejko's residence house a gallery of his paintings and cartoons for the polychromy inside Cracow's St Mary's Church.
