Painters, writers and poets have often immortalised the image of the manor house, at one time such a common sight in the Polish countryside Z wooden, one-storeyed, and with a characteristic porch supported by two columns, having a gabled roof. Although at one time there were many such manor houses, most of them either were demolished or fell into ruin after the Second World War. The nineteenth-century manor house in Dolega has survived in excellent condition, making it especially valuable for anyone wishing to learn about the way of life, mentality and tastes of the landed gentry in Poland, a class that played such an important role in Polish history and culture.
The manor is a modest one, with a building at the front in which the more elegant rooms were located (the dining room, salon and study), linked to two side wings where the private quarters and the scullery and other utility rooms were located. It is surrounded by a park, which is actually a natural forest, in which a small nineteenth-century chapel built by the manor's owners. The manor house was opened to visitors in 1981. The interiors have been restored and furnished to reproduce the atmosphere in such a home. All the rooms whose original purpose has been kept are furnished with nineteenth-century pieces. Care has been given to details that help recreate the atmosphere in the manor houses of the szlachta (Polish nobility). The vitrine in the salon is filled with mementos of the Polish national uprisings, evidence of the owner's patriotism, something which was of special importance for the noble class in the nineteenth century, a period when Poland did not have a state of its own.
