Daegu International Contemporary Music Festival (DCMF) is organized by the Young Musician's Society. The Society was established by Jin Kyu Young, a professor at the Yeungnam University, along with several professors and students from Seoul, Daegu and other cities, with the aim of developing better understanding of contemporary music and exchanging musical information. The Society hosted the 1st Daegu Contemporary Music Festival in 1990. In 2001, the official name of the event was changed to Daegu International Contemporary Music Festival.
The annual DCMF has provided opportunities to understand the work of many famous composers. It also discovered many talented young composers and gave them a chance to present concerts and study abroad. The DCMF has shown that a regional city such as Daegu has the potential to host an international music festival by inviting world's leading composers, such as renowned Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki, and providing high quality contemporary music. Currently, the DCMF carries out a regular exchange with China, while German performers and composers participate in the event every other year. The communication and exchange between the musicians from various regions through the Festivals enables Daegu to be widely recognised in Germany, the United States, Japan, Poland, Hungary or Canada as a creative city.
Many prominent ensembles, such as Het Trio, Modern Ensemble, Airef String Quartet, Duo Nova from Japan, Trio-Rosenstock from Germany, Walasek String Quartet from Poland, New Music Ensemble, L'ART POUR L'ART from Germany as well as individual performers such as Thomas Grossenbacher, Keiko Tamura, Malke Reisener, P.Veale, Igor Nazarov, Taishi Haarada, Yoshiki Nose, Takashi Saito, Anja Wetzki, Christine Stojantschew have performed in Daegu at the invitation of the Society. The Festival has also hosted many guest composers such as Jörg Birkenkötter, Gunter Steinke, Jo Kondo, Pagh-Paan Younghi , Krzysztof Penderecki, Jia Guoping and Tom Johnson.
The Society also hosts symposiums and chamber music concerts promoting Korean music to the rest of the world.
