"Long known for its extraordinary actors, directors and designers, Polish theatre is currently among the most exciting in the world and director Radoslaw Rychcik is one of its young visionaries", said Richard Wolfe, Artistic Director of the Pi Theatre at the 2011 PuSH festival, where Rychcik presented his adaptation of the Bernard-Marie Koltès. At the end of January, Rychcik joins fellow directors and mentors Krystian Lupa and Krzysztof Warlikowski at the prestigious Santiago a Mile theatre festival, which takes place between January 3 - 30, 2011.
Radosław Rychcik's latest work In the Solitude of the Cotton Fields" / "Samotność pól bawełnianych has captured a geat deal of attention as it's made the rounds at a number of festivals across North America - from PICA's Time-Based Art Festival and REDCAT in Los Angeles to On the Boards in Seattle and the PuSH Festival in Vancouver. Based on the searing text by the late French playwright and enfant terrible Bernard-Marie Koltès and backed by live music from the art-rock band Natural Born Chillers, In the Solitude of Cotton Fields portrays a raw and illicit encounter between two men known only as The Dealer (Wojciech Niemczyk) and The Client (Tomasz Nosiński ). While disarming the audience with all of the posturing and swagger of an Eastern European punk concert, it lays bare the harsh, bleak realities of human exchange in which each side is constantly pushing to get something from the other. The interplay of supply and demand, the direction of capitalism, shows much deeper edges of the hand of this young director who puts out the power of manipulation and the fragility of the spirit. The audio-visual experience is further amped by video projections by Marty Stoces. The performance originally premiered in Poland in September 2009.
Radosław Rychcik has described his work as "hysterical theatre" and " has developed the themes of the play as "the solitude of cotton fields, a blackmailing solitude, a solitude on display, a solitude like a good song that you can sing, all songs are about love and there are wolves in every one of them..." The director explained that one of his main aims is to perform with amplitude - for the actors to pass through from zerog to a high level of risk.
The Gazeta Wyborcza daily has called it "a combination of a concert, disco, poetry slam, and club event".Radosław Rychcik (b.1981) began his career as an assistant to renowned director Krystian Lupa on Factory 2 and later worked on Stanisław Wyspiański's drama Protesilas and Laodamia . In 2008, he directed Dictator, based on the Charlie Chaplin film, for the Wybrzeże sztuki Festival in Gdańsk. He recently premiered an adaptation of Flaubert's Madame Bovary at the Dramatyczny Theatre in Warsaw, following his productions of A Lover's Discourse: Fragments by Roland Barthes at the same theatre, and Versus: In the Jungle of Cities, an adaptation from Bertolt Brecht at the New Theatre in Kraków and the Under the Radar Festival in New York.
