Krystian Lupa puts on three performances of his moving "Persona. Marilyn" at the Santiago a Mile International Theatre Festival. Lupa joins fellow directors Radosław Rychcik ("Loneliness") and Krzysztof Warlikowski ("Cleansed") as the three Polish productions on the programme at the South American event - marking a significant presence of Polish theatre in its history
Persona. Marilyn is one segment of Krystian Lupa's triptych devoted to intriguing female personalities across borders and generations. Lupa's focus is on three iconic figures from the Twentieth Century: Marilyn Monroe, Simone Weil and George Gurdjieff. Krystian Lupa does not present their biographies but, instead, creates something of a fantasy on stage inspired by their lives and works. This allows one to get a closer look at the heroes as they collide with the personalities of the actors - themselves quite iconic figures of the stage in their own right.Sandra Korzeniak demonstrates the transformation of an insecure, troubled young woman into the sex goddess Marilyn Monroe. Lupa makes her shed the mask that Norma Jeane Mortenson hides behind and presents a whole set of ways of being - from a childlike dreamer to a spoiled, demanding diva to a fallen icon. All of these opposing personalities build a character that is so complex, she loses her own self within it. As Marilyn once tellingly said - "I'm doing an imitation of myself".
The performance is painful and moving, it is thought-provoking and unnerving, it certainly doesn't give one peace, above all thanks to the wonderful Sandra Korzeniak as Marilyn. The young actress is not only pretty and slim, but she doesn't shy away from anything, which allows her to come closer to the moving truth about the complex personality of the heroine. Beginning with the fantastic way she deals with her nudity, as natural and innocent as that of someone who isn't being observed by anyone, as the nudity of a sick, suffering person.
