The Białystok region, especially around Hajnówka and Bielsk counties, is filled with wooden architecture embellished with characteristic ornamentation. The decorations, often painted in contrasting colours to the buildings, are cut into planks and then nailed to the corners of houses, above windows and along the edges of roofs. Thanks to this special tradition, all together, the houses form a harmonious composition and lend Podlasie architecture a unique style.
These photographs are part of the project In Our Own Way: Stories From the Polish-Belarusian Border. You can find out more about the construction of wooden houses like these in the associated interview with Sergiusz Niczyporuk.
