Selected photographs of the Polish community in Romania by Justyna Mielnikiewicz from the series 'There were three sisters, but only two shirts'. The Polish community in Romania consists primarily of the inhabitants of several villages in Bukovina, Suceava Province, where Romanian citizens of Polish origin are the majority. These are the so-called Chadetian Highlanders who arrived in Bukovina more than 200 years ago. In everyday communication they 'dialect', i.e. use a dialect version of the Polish language. Children learn the literary language in local Romanian schools, and there are also Polish Houses. Poles living in Romania are an officially recognised national minority. They have their own representative in the Romanian parliament, Gerwazy Longher, president of the Union of Poles in Romania since 2002.
