The New Mitoraj Museum is situated in a revitalised modernist market hall on Via Oberdan in Pietrasanta, Italy. Its exhibition features 69 works by the eminent Polish sculptor.
Igor Mitoraj spent most of his life in the West, mainly in France and Italy. It was the Colombian sculptor Fernando Botero – one of the world’s most expensive contemporary artists – who persuaded the Polish artist to buy a house in Pietrasanta, the Italian capital of marble and a city of sculptors, where Michelangelo, amongst others, once worked. The artist regarded this Italian studio as ‘his place on earth’.
The museum was established thanks to the support of the Igor Mitoraj Foundation, based in Pietrasanta, and public funds. The building’s restoration was carried out by the Milan-based studio Open Building Research.
