In 1925 Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz a.k.a. Witkacy gave up oil painting and founded the S.I. Witkiewicz Portrait Firm, which became his primary source of income (‘For a 100 zlotys I’ll make a portrait of an entire figure. Destitution, creativity and life are coming to an end’). Clients had to respect the firm’s Regulations which included a rule saying that ‘misunderstandings are banned.’ In a dozen or so years he created thousands of portraits. Not everyone, however, could count on the privilege of being depicted. Some requests were rejected with a stern: ‘I see no reason for that!’
