Weronika Gęsicka works with archival photographs found on the Internet, police archives and press photo banks, which she processes digitally. The images created by the artist blend surrealistic elements into everyday life scenes, drawing viewers in a mysterious yet familiar world. Her projects often relate to memory and its mechanisms. Born in Włocławek, Poland, the artist is a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw and the Academy of Photography in the same city, as well as a grant holder of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. The presentation of Weronika Gęsicka's works at the Kyotographie was the first solo exhibition of a Polish artist at this event. Weronika Gęsicka was selected as the result of a study visit of the directors of the festival Lucille Reyboz and Yusuke Nakanishi in Poland organised by the Adam Mickiewicz Institute in June 2018.
Weronika Gęsicka was the second Polish artist, after Anna Orłowska, appreciated at a prestigious photography festival in Japan. In 2017, Anna Orłowska's photo project Case Study: Invisibility was awarded at the 33rd Higashikawa Awards Festival in the category for overseas photographers.
