Between 5-20 April 2014, the 33rd Istanbul International Film Festival will screen 200 films, including some of the best Polish cinema of 2013 and 2014. Wajda's Wałęsa: Man Of Hope (2013) appears under the Masters category of the festival, described by the event website as "featuring the latest masterpieces from master directors who are still in top shape and still shaping world cinema, who challenge the years, and who still keep getting awards".

Unable to travel to Istanbul due to health concerns, as announced, Wajda’s award will be presented to Michał Kwieciński, who is the producer of Man of Hope.

Andrzej Wajda was born on the 6th of March 1926 in Suwałki, Poland. A film and theatre director, script-writer and set designer, he is one of the world's most renowned filmmakers and previously won the Academy Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2000 for his more than 35 feature films. In 2011, Wajda was honoured with the International Primo Levi Prize.

Wajda’s rich filmography includes other compelling titles from earlier years, Kanał / Canal (1957), Lotna (1959), Popioły / Ashes (1965), Wesele / The Wedding (1973), Człowiek z żelaza / Man of Iron (1981), Pan Tadeusz (1999), and more recently, Katyń (2007), Tatarak / Sweet Rush (2008), and Wałęsa: Man Of Hope (2013).

In addition to Wajda's Wałęsa, award-winning Polish films among the highlights of this year's program include, Ida (2013) by director Paweł Pawlikowski, Papusza (2013) by directors Joanna Kos-Krauze and Krzysztof Krauze, and Lech Majewski's most recent feature release Field of Dogs (2014).

The 33rd Istanbul International Film Festival is organized by the Foundation for Culture and Arts (IKSV) and sponsored by Akbank. Polish presentations are taking place as part of the 600th anniversary of Polish-Turkish diplomatic and cultural relationships with accompanying events throughout the year in both countries.
