For the fourth time, the audience of the Wuzhen Theatre Festival will have the opportunity to see a production from Poland. On 26th-28th October, the show ‘The Fairy Queen’ directed by Michał Znaniecki will be presented at the festival.
The Wuzhen Theatre Festival is an event founded seven years ago by the Chinese theatre director Meng Jinghui. Currently it is one of the most recognized theatre festivals in China, appreciated for its attractive location in a historic town of Wuzhen near Shanghai and a high level of programming.
The Adam Mickiewicz Institute established collaboration with the Festival in 2015, when the performance Portraits of the Cherry Orchard by the Song of the Goat Theatre was shown in Wuzhen. In 2016, the AMI supported the staging of the Stary Theatre’s production Enemy of the People directed by Jan Klata, and in 2018 the show One Gesture by Wojtek Ziemilski, partially performed in sign language.
The Fairy Queen directed by Michał Znaniecki is a production inspired by Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream and the work of the Polish poets of the Romantic period: Adam Mickiewicz and Juliusz Słowacki. The drama’s action, accompanied by live music of Henry Purcell’s opera arias, takes place on the surface of the lake on which actors and singers move in boats, amid projections displayed on water screens. The performance was presented in 2015 at the Opera Tigre Festival in Argentina and in 2016 in Wrocław as part of the European Capital of Culture programme.
Michał Znaniecki is a director, playwright, stage designer and teacher, collaborating with opera stages in Italy, France, Ireland, Spain, Poland, Argentina, Uruguay and Cuba. He made his directorial debut at the age of 24 at Milan’s La Scala as the youngest director in the history of this famous opera house. Since then, Znaniecki has produced more than 200 new drama, opera and musical productions in major theatres and festivals of the world, working with such artists as Placido Domingo, Piotr Beczała, Mariusz Kwiecień, Lorin Maazel and Jose Cura. Frequently awarded for his artistic, educational and socially involved projects, Znaniecki specialises in open-air productions presented at stadiums, on islands and in parks. In 2012, on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of his artistic activity, he was awarded the Silver Medal for Merit to Culture – Gloria Artis by the Minister of Culture and National Heritage.
The Fairy Queen will be presented in Wuzhen three times on 26th, 27th and 28th October 2019 on the open-air stage of the Water Theatre.
