The theme of this year’s London Design Biennale (LDB) is ‘Resonance’. ‘We live in an age of hyper resonance, the consequences of which are both exhilarating and devastating. Everything we design and everything we produce resonates’, Es Devlin, LDB's Artistic Director explains.’ Designers from around the globe will present their interpretations of the theme.
Poland’s exhibition The Clothed Home: Tuning In To the Seasonal Imagination, organised the Adam Mickiewicz Institute, was conceived by Małgorzata Kuciewicz and Simone De Iacobis of the Centrala design group, curator Aleksandra Kędziorek and artist Alicja Bielawska, explores the ways in which textiles are used to reflect the rhythm of seasonal changes in domestic interiors. It recalls bygone rituals through an artistic installation, searching for inspiration for contemporary climate-responsive design. Barbara Krzeska, Deputy Director of the Adam Mickiewicz Institute, says:
Text
Nowadays, when we can maintain a constant temperature in our homes all year round, we have a constant supply of light, which has made us indifferent to the natural cycles of nature. 'The Clothed Home' appeals to the imagination, showing how the natural seasonal cycle determined the rhythm of our homes.

The Clothed Home shows how tour ancestors 'clothed' their houses in hand-woven rugs, wall coverings, quilts, carpets and other textiles. The cycle of the seasons set the rhythm of subsequent arrangements of the space: from closed in frosty winter, to open in the heat of summer. A reminder to pay attention to our surroundings, Alicja Bielawska brings us back to the basics focussing on the textiles that made home... home. Bielawska specialises in spatial installations with the use of fabrics. The exhibition may serve as an inspiration for contemporary designers, pointing out how design can help us adjust stay in tune with the natural rhythm of the year/ The exhibition, rooted in Polish textile patterns from before electricity, evokes home rituals that allow one to cultivate a relationship with the natural world and react more carefully to its constant changes.

The textile installation was manufactured by local Polish artisans using traditional weaving techniques and natural fabrics. The color palette – inspired by the year-round observation of a specific Polish landscape – encourages us to celebrate the passage of time and consciously experience the seasonal rhythm of nature.
The author of the exhibition's visual identification is Anna Kulachek, Artistic Director of the Strelka Institute, while Piotr Chuchla is behind the graphic design.
The concept of the exhibition was selected during an open call organised by the Adam Mickiewicz Institute. The jury, which included external experts, representatives of the Institute and the director of the London Design Biennale, was convinced by the timeliness of this particular project and impressed by the intriguing interpretation of the Biennale’s theme.
The Polish Pavilion will be open to visitors from 1st to 27th June. The exhibitions will be available to visitors, taking into account COVID safety protocols. Find out more: The Clothed Home at LDB 2021
