The script is an adaptation of Witold Gombrowicz’s last novel Cosmos, a philosophical and enigmatic work. Żuławski has introduced some changes, however, like moving the setting from 1930s Poland to contemporary Portugal, where the film was shot. The film features an international cast from France, Portugal, and Switzerland, with actors such as Jonathan Genet, Sabine Azema, Jean-Francois Balmer, Johan Libereau, Victoria Guerra, Clementine Pons, and Andy Gillet.
The screening of the movie will be followed by a Q&A session with Andrzej Korzyński, composer of the original score.
Besides his newest film, Spotlight on Andrzej Żuławski features a selection of his earlier Polish masterpieces, which have been digitally restored. The New York audience will be able to see Żuławski’s debut The Third Part of the Night – an extraordinary image of war and its consequences, as well as his visionary movie On the Silver Globe, which for political reasons took more than 10 years to make. Fans of gore may choose The Devil – a philosophical horror set in the 18th century. The screenings will be accompanied by a Q&A with composer Andrzej Korzyński and Żuławski scholar Daniel Bird.
Curated by the editors of Film Comment magazine, Film Comment Selects is a festival held annually at the Film Society at Lincoln Center in New York City. The festival presents an eclectic selection of international films, focusing on ‘the rare and the rediscovered, the unclassifiable and the underrated, the sacred and the profane…’
