Just as most important social and cultural events, the World Expo was also postponed a year due to COVID-19 restrictions. Hence, EXPO 2020 Dubai! The event is being held in a Arab country for the first time in its history. The Adam Mickiewicz Institute presents four exhibitions illustrating the richness and diversity of Polish culture, while showcasing the incredible talent and creativity of Poland's artists.
Exhibitions presented by the Adam Mickiewicz Institute during EXPO 2020 Dubai:
The Amazing Land of Quarks, Elephants & Pierogi, 10th-16th December 2021
The Amazing Land of Quarks, Elephants & Pierogi is a story about the Polish language – a mysterious place where wonderful and wacky things happen. Delightfully designed by Polish visual artist Magdalena Burdzyńska, it is a feast for the eyes and the brain. Test your Polish skills – if you dare!
The exhibition is based on the award-winning book Quarks, Elephants & Pierogi: Poland in 100 Words published by Culture.pl and created by Culture.pl's very own Sylwia Jabłońska, Mikołaj Gliński, Matt Davies and Adam Żuławski.
Rituals, 18th-28th December 2021
Rituals is a contemporary dialogue with the tradition of sharing the opłatek, or Christmas wafer – the unleavened wafer made of flour and water often embossed with a religious image. Everyone attending Christmas Eve dinner gets one and then shares pieces of it with everyone else. This is accompanied by exchanges of good wishes and occurs before sitting down to eat. This tradition is linked to the breaking of bread at the Last Supper.
Initially produced in monasteries, they became secularised over time: they began to be baked outside of churches, and colorful decorations became more and more popular. The core of the exhibition is five contemporary interpretations of a secular Christmas wafer, designed by the best Polish graphic and design studios.
The Story of Wacław Seweryn Rzewuski, 31st December 2021 - 16th January 2022
The Story of Wacław Seweryn Rzewuski is a record of the Polish explorer's adventures while travelling around the Middle East. Rzewuski was a great promoter of Poland in the Arab world and vice versa. His story is a symbol of the unique bridge connecting seemingly two distant worlds.
Landscapes of Leisure, 18th-31st March 2022
Landscapes of Leisure addresses the universal need for rest and relaxation in the context of Polish architecture. Polish architecture has addressed this subject for hundreds of years, as well as the need to commune with nature and nurture our relationship with it. It paints a fascinating picture of a changing society and a shift in the way we spend our free time. These changes are forcing the creation of completely new spaces for leisurely activities. The exhibition presents an overview of some of the most interesting phenomena in Polish leisure architecture.
