The festival presents a new take on electronic music and its various aesthetics and musical trends - from classical electro-acoustic music to pop, intuitive or alternative music
The programme is based on the structure of an atom, combining elementary particles placed on the orbits that represent interpretation, integration and interaction. Sound, light, image, motion, space and time meet together to create multi-layered works of art. To achieve this contemporary artists use cutting-edge computer techniques to blend traditional sounds with "live electronics" and "live multimedia art".
Musica Electronica Nova 2011 references the musical storehouse accumulated over the last 60 years up through the high-speed musical evolution of today and its continuously shifting artistic forms. This year's edition focuses on France. A special guest of the festival is Pierre Jodlowski, young French composer whose work is spread over a number of domains. Jodlowski works with images, interactive programming, and staging. He asserts the practice of a music that is "active" in both its physical dimension (gestures, energies, and spaces) and its psychological dimension (evocation, memory, and cinematographic aspects).
Marcin Krajewski of the De Musica Association says that the festival presents a new way of listening to music, namely,
Sound Tasting, digestible not only to synaesthetes and fans of correspondence des arts. Treating the aural sensations as if they were those of the tastebuds and vice versa could potentially enrich both of them. Doesn't Lutosławski's 'two-movement' form disclose all of its assets if it's viewed as a main course with the hors d'oeuvre? The organisers of the MEN festival are serving three dishes - specialties of French, Hungarian and Polish cuisine.
Some of the particularly important events at the MEN 2011 Festival include a concert by Symphony Orchestra of the Wrocław National Philharmonic and the Electronic Operas Night. The Symphony Orchestra together with Stanisław Krupowicz and the engineers of IRCAM-u (Institut de Recherche et Coordination Acoustique/Musique - a European institute for science in the field of music and sound and avant garde electro-acoustical art music) conducted by Jacek Kaspszyk, presenting pieces by Bruno Mantovani, Stanisław Krupowicz and György Ligeti. INA/GRM and MOTUS perform an "electronic opera" with an impressive orchestra of loudspeakers - a sound diffusion system known as acousmonium.
Among the artists presented at the festival are many outstanding composers, musicians and conductors who create groundbreaking new styles and techniques in contemporary music. François Bayle, Pierre Boulez, Denis Dufour, Luc Ferrari, Benjamin de la Fuente, Gyorgi Ligeti, Bruno Mantovani, Jean Claude Risset, Daniel Teruggi, Wojciech Blecharz, Dobromiła Jaskot, Stanisław Krupowicz, Lidia Zielińska just to name a few. Participating ensembles include Court Circuit, Syntax, Leopoldinum, soloists: Elżbieta Chojnacka, Daniel Kientzy, Anna Petrini, Fabrice Junger, the Mimeo intuition music group and the very popular Sonic Codex Orchestra.
All of this begins at the heart of the city at the Pan Tadeusz Museum with the opening of Pierre Jodlowski's installation Passage. From there the audiences embark on the exciting journey of discovering new sounds. First stop Saturday evening: Elzbieta Chojnacka and her blazing harpsichord. The following day Cezary Duchnowski Martha's Garden premieres at the Wrocław Opera House.
MEN 2011 collaborates with WRO Visual Art Biennale 2011, Wroclaw Polytechnic and Academy of Music, National Audiovisual Institute (NinA), Polish Radio and many other institutions and centres. Festival's co-founder and its co-organiser is the Polish Composers Union. The artistic director of MEN is Elżbieta Sikora, and the members of the Programme Committee are (apart from Elżbieta Sikora) Krzysztof Knittel, Sławomir Kupczak, Monika Pasiecznik and Jan Topolski.
