Żuławski Retrospective at Kaohsiung Film Festival in Taiwan
From the Third Part of the Night to Cosmos – five films by Andrzej Żuławski will be shown at a retrospective of his work at Kaohsiung Film Festival in Taiwan.
Five films by outstanding director Andrzej Żuławski will be shown at the Taiwanese festival, including The Third Part of the Night – Żuławski’s film debut, a remarkable tale about war inspired by the life of Mirosław Żuławski, the director’s father, who worked feeding lice in the Institute for the Study of Typhus and Virology in Lviv during the Second World War.
The programme of the retrospective features the most important pictures of the Polish artist’s output: The Devil from 1972, a horror which was banned by the censors of the communist regime; Possession (1981), a controversial thriller with an incredible performance by Isabelle Adjani; and On the Silver Globe (1987), a poetic fantasy film that became an important part of science-fiction film history. The review of Żuławski’s films will be crowned by a showing of Cosmos, the artist's last film, which he based on Witold Gombrowicz’s prose.

In addition to Żuławski’s films, the audience of Kaohsiung Film Festival will be able to see a documentary by Daniel Bird – The Oher Side of the Wall: The Making of Possession. As well as a behind-the-scenes look at the film, it describes the phenomenon of Żuławski's work. One of the most unusual Polish film-makers, he intellectually and eruditely transcended the traditional imagery of Polish cinematography in his art.
This year’s edition of Kaohsiung Film Festival also features a retrospective of the Quay brothers' work, a duo of animators known for adapting Bruno Schulz’s and Stanisław Lem’s prose.
