Polish-Japanese Clues of Tadeusz Kantor
“Kantor-Tropy” (Kantor-Clues) is an interdisciplinary project started by Katarzyna Pastuszak and Misako Ueda and carried out by the Amareya Theatre & Guests and major Japanese artists.
The project includes a theatrical performance titled Kantor_Tropy, directed by Katarzyna Pastuszak, with choreography by Saburo Teshigawara (Karas, Tokyo) and music by Joanna Duda and Jan Młynarski. Actors from Poland and abroad will perform in the play, including choreographer and dancer Kae Ishimoto (Japan), Anna Kalwajtys, Aleksandra Śliwińska, Agnieszka Kamińska (Amareya Theatre), Daniela Komędera, and Daisuke Tsukuda (costumes). The world premiere will be hosted in the Gdańsk Shakespeare Theatre, followed by performances in Cricoteca in Kraków and Theatre X in Tokyo at the Tadeusz Kantor GoEnNen Performance Festival 2015.
The project also includes creating a performance/happening Kantor_Tropy: Collage that will be composed of contemporary dance, butō, performance, modern music, and visual arts. Kantor_Tropy: Collage was directly inspired by a deep relation between the dance of Ankoku butō by Hijikata Tatsumi, a major creator of Japanese avant-garde, and the aesthetic concepts and art of Tadeusz Kantor. The performance/happening will be attended by Japanese butō dancers Kawamoto Yuko and Ishimoto Kae, as well as figures from the art world, such as visual artist and film director Joanna Zastróżna and artists of the Amareya Theatre & Guests.

An important part of Kantor_Tropy is an exhibition of photographs of Tadeusz Kantor by Czesław Czapliński and a screening of Krzysztof Miklaszewski’s documentary about the legendary theater director’s life. A project catalogue on Taduesz Kantor’s influence in Japan and the relation of his work with dance will be issued as well. The editors of the catalogue are Anna Królica and Nikodem Karolak.
The project has been inspired by TheatreX artistic director Misako Ueda. In 1992, she was awarded Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland for her extraordinary involvement in promoting Polish culture in Japan, such as producing theater performances with Andrzej Wajda and Jan Peszek. In 2014, she invited Karolina Pastuszak and the Amareya Theatre to cooperate in making the Nomadic Girl.
The project is a result of the Młoda Polska 2015 Scholarship founded by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage and the city of Gdańsk. Partners and co-producers of the project include: Theatre X (Tokyo) – Misako Ueda; The Baltic Sea Culture Centre in Gdańsk; Polish Institute in Tokyo; Adam Mickiewicz Institute (culture.pl); Cricoteka; Gdańsk Shakespeare Theatre; Gdański Archipelag Kultury.
