Our Exhibitions at the Google Cultural Institute: Lutosławski 1913-1994
On 23rd January, 2015, the Google Cultural Institute launched the "Witold Lutosławski 1913-1994" multimedia exhibition, composed of archival photographs, video materials and comments from the composer’s friends, family and co-workers, and from the composer himself. The exhibition was organized by Culture.pl.
I wanted to recreate the pleasure of playing by adding solo parts to the parts of the band
– said Lutosławski in his impeccable English. On their way through the virtual exhibition, visitors will have a chance to see the author of the Chain at home and at work, and meet the composer’s wife Danuta and his favourite co-workers. Finally, one can discover how and why he composed. Ryszard Kapuściński and Esa-Pekka Salonen, a Finnish composer and conductor who lead the premiere of Lutosławski’s Symphony No. 4, will tell stories about the Polish composer.

The exhibition uses photographs from Elżbieta Markowska’s album Lutosławski 1913-2013, and archival images shared by the Witold Lutosławski Society and the Polish Music Information Centre. The captions of the photographs are quotes from his relatives and co-workers, as well as Lutosławski’s own statements about his life and work. The exhibition is complemented with video materials about the composer’s life, produced in 2013 for the Woven Words cycle, co-organized for Lutosławski’s 100th birthday celebrations by the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the Adam Mickiewicz Institute.
Ewa Bogusz-Moore, Polska Music's programme manager, is the exhibition’s curator, Zofia Barańska – its editor, and Elżbieta Markowska, the author of the Lutosławski 1913-2013 album and the former editor of Polish Radio 2, was a consultant.
This is the third exhibition prepared by Culture.pl to be made available on the Google Cultural Institute platform. The Art of Freedom gallery is dedicated to one of the most awarded films about the Polish mountaineers of the 70s and 80s. The other Culture.pl gallery is dedicated to the series of short documentary films awarded in the first edition of Solidarity Shorts, an international film contest organized by the Lech Walesa Institute.
The Google Cultural Institute is a global platform launched in 2011. It focuses on sharing collections of cultural and historical materials with the world’s internet users. The institute works with over 400 cultural institutions from more than 50 countries around the world. Art Project, a previous project of the Google Cultural Institute, made hundreds of images of world’s most popular paintings (including those from the Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź and the Wilanów Palace Museum) available to a global audience.
