'The mirror throws my likeness back at me, but I cannot move' is the motto of Jan Kott's book, a collection of short, witty sketches. Kott remains true to the objects of his fascination, by calling forth such figures as Shakespeare and Brecht, Nałkowska and Gombrowicz, Grotowski and many more. He writes about literature and theatre, about authors and directors, as well as about actors - but 'actors, of course, are no different from the rest of us. In different situations, however rarely or frequently, we all behave like actors, pull faces - and not only in front of the mirror'.
Jan Kott (1914-2001), theatre critic and essayist, is known throughout the world. He lived in the USA from the late sixties, and is author of the celebrated book Szekspir współczesny / The Contemporary Shakespeare.
