Julian Antoniszczak’s film debut, produced in the Kraków branch of the Miniature Film Studio in Warsaw.
The film’s artistic supervisor was Kazimierz Urbański — founder of the Film Drawing Studio at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków,
Antoniszczak’s former teacher and the head of the Kraków Animated Film Studio.
Phobia follows the story of Phobian Ewaryst Dobdziak, ‘a naïve‑Monday painter’ who sets out on an outdoor hike in search of inspiration. This grotesque story is presented in extraordinary form. The director uses a whole array of innovative ideas: painting directly on the film, scratching out and burning it, as well as the technique he developed as a student — the ‘plasmacreatures’ that involved the use colour, in the form of floating ink shapes. The music was composed by
Eugeniusz Rudnik, an eminent contemporary composer, while the recording was made at the now legendary Polish Radio Experimental Studio. Phobian’s wife, Kordula Dobdziak, speaks with the voice of the actress Irena Kwiatkowska.
