In his most recent work, Tristes Tropiques (2009), Simon employs an optical device — called an eye tracker — which measures eye movement. Hoping to probe the unconscious substrate of cognitive processes, he uses it to explore art-world and private- life visual material, the results of the inquiries arranging themselves into a personal narrative. The machine was designed using open source software and blueprints.
