Amy's View – Mariusz Grzegorzek

Margaret Thatcher has just become the Prime Minister. Evelyn Thomas (Joanna Szczepkowska), a theatrical actress is more famous then ever. Dominic Tyghe (Szymon Bobrowski), the fiancé of her daughter Amy (Dominika Ostałowska), a young and energetic young man, is a writer. Several years later, Evelyn plays minor roles in soap operas, and Dominic, more and more successful, becomes a popular TV character.

David Hare's text became a mean of analysis of human behaviour in the world for the Polish director, which is more and more dominated by the media. The British turn of the 1980s is strangely similar to the changes, which took place in Poland in the 1990s.

The actor starring Dominic, Szymon Bobrowski, really is a TV star. Dominika Ostałowska (Amy), stars in a soap opera. (...) Nowadays in Warsaw, it is really difficult to find a play without TV faces and to say whether the public keeps going to the theatre because of the theatre, or to see their favourite TV stars live, wrote Roman Pawłowski in Gazeta Wyborcza.

There have been many similar stories about the destructive influence of media. Grzegorzek's staging is different because of its micro scale of observation and the concentration Grzegorzek uses to show the changes taking place in his characters.

David Hare, Zdaniem Amy / Amy's View, translated by Małgorzata Semil, directed by Mariusz Grzegorzek, scenery designed by Jagna Janicka. Polish premiere: April 28, 2001 at the Powszechny Theatre in Warsaw.
