Set in the Polish Mazury (Masuria) region along the former Polish-Prussian border in 1945, the film is about the emotional tie developing between a former Army soldier Tadeus and the widow of a German soldier Rose. When the region is handed over to Poland in 1945, the woman decides to stay. The dramatic story of her life is revealed - she was brutally raped by soldiers and forced into prostitution by the Soviets, now treated with contempt by new settlers in Mazury, who look upon her as a German.
