A 1965 movie starring Catherine Deneuve as a mentally ill young woman. Alone in the flat after her sister has left, the protagonist gives in to suppressed obsessions. In her mind she has created a sick image of the world, and ends up committing murder.
Repulsion has been compared to Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho, and the carefully dosed suspense and claustrophobic scenery contributed to its success. Favourable reviews appeared in Poland, too, though accompanied by the criticism of "cynical commercialism".
The script to the film was co-written by Gerard Brach. Although Polanski later confessed that he "never really liked the movie", Repulsion won the Special Award of the Jury and FIPRESCI award at the Berlin Festival, 1965.
