The Wydawnictwo Literackie (WL, "Literary Press") publishing company promotes the most interesting phenomena of literature, and the most prominent literary authors from Poland and abroad. Among the writers connected with the company are Polish Nobel Prize laurates Wisława Szymborska and Czesław Miłosz, and other acclaimed names, such as: Gustaw Herling-Grudziński, Jan Kott, Stanisław Lem, Ewa Lipska, Tadeusz Różewicz, Jan Józef Szczepański, Jan Twardowski, Karol Wojtyła, Adam Zagajewski, as well as many others.
The most distinguished specialists in literature, history, film, and theatre, such as: Josif Brodski, Michał Głowiński, Maria Janion, Jan Kott, Henryk Markiewicz, Tadeusz Nyczek, Tomas Venclova and translators: Stanisław Barańczak and Karl Dedecius were also cooperating with the WL company.
After 1980, as the first publisher in post-war Poland, the WL issued revised collections of the outstanding exiled authors: Witold Gombrowicz and Czesław Miłosz. A branch of the WL publishing house functioned in Wrocław between 1982 and1986, and it was later transformed into the Wydawnictwo Dolnośląskie (Lower Silesia) publisher.
The most popular series of the WL are:Lekcja Literatury, Biblioteka Poezji Młodej Polski, Pary, Obrazy, Współczesność, Pisarze Języka Niemieckiego, Leksykon Historii i Kultury Polskiej and Monografie. (A Lesson In Literature, The Library of the Młoda Polska Poetry, Couples, Paintings, Contemporaneity, Writers of the German Language, Lexicon of Polish History and Culture, Monographs), The Proza Iberoamerykańska (Latin American Prose) series enjoyed incredible popularity during the 1980s, followed by Literatura Iberyjska (Iberian Literature). The publishing house also issues plays, essays, children's literature and film-related books.
Most recently, the WL is also becoming known for its educational entries, such as dictionaries, lexicons, and textbooks for teaching foreign languages and the humanities.
