The museum is housed in the old town hall, a Gothic building constructed in the late thirteenth century, reconstructed in the sixteenth century in the Renaissance style by an Italian architect known by his Polonised name, Jan Baptysta Quadro z Lugano; it was founded in 1954 as the heir to the City Museum, which had opened in 1930. The museum collects various kinds of exhibits, including valuable documents, views of the city, souvenirs from many different kinds of organisations and associations, artistic crafts, portraits of famous residents of Poznan, all of which document the city's history over its several hundred years of existence. This history can be divided as follows: from the tenth century to 1450, from 1450 to the late seventeenth century, from the nineteenth century until 1918, and from 1918 to the present.
Two collections are particularly significant: old photographs and photography equipment, and items connected with the history of Wielkopolski shooting clubs.
Permanent exhibitions: "The City of Poznan in the Middle Ages", "The Spatial and Economic Development of Poznan in the Fifteenth and Sixteenth Centuries", "The History of Poznan and Wielkopolski Guilds: The Development of Crafts until the Late Eighteenth Century", "The History of the City of Poznan from the Sixteenth to the Late Eighteenth Century", "The History of Poznan from the Period of the Partitions until 1945", "Wielkopolski Shooting Clubs".
