The Spirit of Poland initiative is to promote Polish design in Brazil once again. The first of this year’s exhibitions, part of DW! São Paulo Design Weekend, ended in August and the second one is to take place in the National Museum of Brazil in November.
The exhibition – in accordance with the previous premise – will present products by Polish brands which were co-created by designers. The context for the exhibits will be a history of the individual companies presented in an interesting way so as to encourage the viewer to get to know more about the products themselves, as well as the cultural and business background of their creation. The exhibition’s main purpose is to introduce Polish material culture and its history and contemporary development.
A big distinction for The Spirit of Poland is the location where the exhibition takes place. Brasilia, the country’s capital since 1955, is a futuristic city of modernism, designed in accordance with the innovative ideas of Le Corbusier, Oscar Niemeyer and Lucio Costa. The concept for Brasilia, unique in the world, on one hand proved to be controversial because of its dehumanization, but on the other it gained worldwide fame and became the subject of never-ending discussion between architects, journalists and historians. Brasilia’s Honestino Guimarães National Museum is located in a building designed by Oscar Niemeyer, which has a characteristic domed shape and is widely recognized as one of the world icons of modernist architecture. Showing The Spirit of Poland exhibition in such a prestigious place is a chance to strengthen the image of Polish design both in Brazil and on the international stage.
As part of the exhibition at the National Museum’s Terreo Gallery, the organizers will also hold lectures and talks to guests from the worlds of diplomacy, design and art, including representatives of embassies, cultural institutions, the local artistic community and students from local art schools and universities.
