The prewar museum that used to be housed in the Staroscianski castle in Nowy Sacz was completely destroyed in 1945, and had to be reorganised from scratch after the Second World War. The former canon's residence, known as the "Gothic" residence, which dates from the sixteenth century, began to be used as a museum in 1950, and is currently the main seat of the museum. In 1982, the museum also began to use the renovated building of the former synagogue, where the Art Gallery is located now. In 1984, the Maria Ritter Gallery was opened, which occupies two rooms in the painter's family home. Thanks to the museum's efforts, the Sacz Ethnographic Park, was organised, along with its branch in Krynica. The collections of the District Museum in Nowy Sacz contain exhibits on the archaeology and history of the Sacz region and art from the Middle Ages to the present including militaria, painting, prints, sculpture, fabrics, decorative arts, including crafts and folk art. The most important collections associated with the museum are its "non-professional" items, above all the na•ve art of Nikifor of Krynica, and the rich collection of old prints and Orthodox church art from the seventeenth to the twentieth centuries, including icons, carvings and liturgical objects from Lemko Orthodox churches from the Sacz region.
Permanent exhibitions: "Sacred Guild Art from the Fourteenth to the Nineteenth Centuries" (including paintings and carvings made by artists from Krakow-Sacz School), "The Sacz Castle and its History", "The Work of Nikifor of Krynica", "Folk Art of the Eighteenth to the Early Twentieth Centuries", "Orthodox Sacred Art".
