This year's programme is packed full of concerts, workshops, recording sessions and other events related to the independent music scene to the east of England. It takes the traditional - such as accordions and saxophones - and gives them a new spin with Postatemczak/Kusiolek avant-garde approach. Bogusław Schaeffer’s graphic scores come to life in the performance by the Vocal Constructivists, as well as a new commission from talented composer Jan Duszyński, who received his education at the Warsaw Academy of Music and the Julliard School, composing major works for over a decade.
Improvisation is also a focus on the event, with percussionist Hubert Zemler presenting pieces from his recent album Moped, along with Rafał Mazur's acoustic bass guitar solo and Marcin Masecki on piano and harpsichord. For Mazur and Masecki both, improvisation is key to reaching new sounds and techniques for a range of musical genres. UK vibes player Jim Hart joins the Poles on stage for what may be a night of improvised treats.
Electro-pop fans get their fix with a show from Paris Tetris, who take the underground for an electrifying ride. Other performers include Kacper Ziemianin, Patrick Farmer and Krzysztof Topolski, with a special project based on capturing the "natural" sounds of a city - drawing upon the urban soundscape of London and Poland's Tricity, followed by a performance by Levity (Jacek Kita on keyboards, Piotr Domagalski on bass and Jerzy Rogiewicz on percussion), who produce a sound that is an improvised blend of post-rock, free jazz and folk.
Jazz and Experimental Music From Poland 2012 is funded by Arts Council England, Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, and Polish Cultural Institute in London. The festival is produced and programmed by Kasia Sobucka, co-founder of Deconstruction Project. Festival partner: Lado ABC. Concerts taking place in various venues across London.
