Stanisław Janowski, "Portrait of Gabriela Zapolska", 1903
The 90th anniversary of Gabriela Zapolska's death, which falls on December 21, 2011, (1857-1921) became an opportunity to organise an exhibition dedicated to the author's life and work, "Fin-de-siècle-ist. Gabriela Zapolska. From Books and Stages"
The exhibition is organised jointly by the
Adam Mickiewicz Museum of Literature and the Theatre Museum in Warsaw. It will be on display from April till June 2011 at the Museum of Literature's exhibition halls by 20 Old Town Square in Warsaw.
The exposition will bring back the memory of not only Gabriela Zapolska the playwright and novelist, but also the actress, art collector, column writer and theatre critic. It will be set against the artistic trends of the second half and the turn of the 19th century.
Her playwright output had an important impact on the development of the Polish comedy of manners and the Polish drama, in her whole body of work is a chronicle of the times she lived in, now becoming a thing of interest. The exhibition will put on display not only Zapolska's great passion - theatre (Zapolska was the author of a famous play The Morality of Mrs Dulska), but also her less known prose and epistolographical output, and her barely known but vast journalistic work she did for almost 30 years, writing for Warsaw, Kraków and Lvov magazines. All of her creative work is embedded in this experience, in her observations and the commentary of current events.
The authors of the scripts and the exhibition's commissioners are the Museum of Literature curator Małgorzata Górzyńska and curator Monika Chudzikowska from the Theatre Museum. The author of the artistic setting and stage design is Witold Błażejowski - known for his many exhibition projects and a laureate of many awards in this field.
The museum pieces come from the collections of the Literature and Theatre Museums as well as other domestic and foreign institutions and private collections.
