Libera's latest project is based on the construction of a car prototype that would be a visual and spatial hybrid in which perspective is manipulated to create the semblance of deformations and visual shortcuts in three dimensions using photography and video
Alain Robbe-Grillet, the co-creator of the Nouveau Roman (New Novel) presented the world as flat as opposed to the old myth of profundity. In his latest project, Zbigniew Libera recreates and constructs this flattened world in three dimensions, putting the light on previously unseen and inaccessible areas of the concept.
Rzeczywistość jest płaska / Reality is Flat is based on photographic materials that manipulate the shape and dimensions of the car creating the semblance of deformations through visual shortcuts in three dimensions in photography and video. The resulting depiction is ultimately different from the actual form and proportions of the vehicle. Through such a scheme, the artist demonstrates methods of visual illusions and erasing their hypnotic appeal. The aim is to present the influence of consumerist images on the perception of reality and the creation of myths.
Libera's current project develops themes the artist had been analysing in previous works about consumer culture such as the series Urządzenia korekcyjne / Corrective Devices (1994-1997) or Lego. Obóz koncentracyjny / Lego: the concentration camp, (1996). He also exposed the mechanisms of the sight and ways of perceiving the visual culture surrounding us, as in Pozytywy / Positives (2002-2003) and La vue / Sight (2004-2006).
This time, the artist deconstructs one of the most mythologised objects of the consumerism culture: the automobile, which has become a cult symbol that both inspires and reflects society's aspirations towards a particular aesthetic and level of Libera chose to re-depict and re-design a myth-building tool on a massive scale often analysed by culture observers and scientists such as Roland Barthes, Jean Baudrillard or Gillo Dorfles.
The presented project is a work in progress. The exhibition displays sketches, models, photographs and a film on the construction cycle of a car.
The exhibition runs between December 21, 2010 - February 19, 2011.
