This spring, Polish poets abound in cities across Italy, with a series of events dedicated to some of Poland's best bards - Adam Zagajewski, Czesław Miłosz, Ryszard Krynicki, Jerzy Górzański and Janusz Drzewucki
On March 16, the Polish Institute in Rome hosts a meeting dedicated to the Italian edition of
Adam Zagajewski's La ragazzina di Vermeer ("Vermeer's Little Girl"), translated by Paola Malavasi and published by Edizioni del Leone. Participants in the discussion include Krystyna Jaworska, lecturer in Polish Language and Literature at the University of Turin and translator. Massimiliano Cutrera will read a selection of poems.
La ragazzina di Vermeer is not the only book of Zagajewski's published recently in Italy, in 2007 a volume of his essays Tradimento translated by Valentina Parisi was published by Edizioni Adelphi. In 2010 Zagajewski was named the
laureate of European Poetry Award presented in Treviso, Italy in October 2010.
The following day, the John Cabot University in Rome hosts the first part of a two-day symposium on Joseph Brodsky, the Russian-American poet and essayist. Zagajewski joins Roberto Calasso (Italy), Boris Khersonsky (Russia), Mary Jo Salter (USA), Mark Strand (USA), Derek Walcott (Santa Lucia) in a tribute recital to Brodsky.
On March 18, symposium members gather at the American Academy in Rome, where the Nobel Prize-winner was the Academy's "poet in residence" in 1981, to recite Brodsky's poems in English, Italian and Russia, followed by a discussion on his life and works.
