The seventh edition of the Zawirowania Annual Dance Theatre Festival brings together dance troupes from across the globe on three stages in the Polish capital
A total of 19 groups from 16 different countries have signed up to participate in the festival, including groups from the USA, Israel, Mexico and Japan. The festival takes place in Warsaw in venues that include Teatr Polski and Centralny Basen Artystyczny.
Special focus is placed on a series of Scandinavian dances. Four groups representing the Scandinavian nations include: the Cullberg Ballet Theatre from Sweden, with a performance entitled "JJ Voices", based on the music of legendary rock singer Janis Joplin, the Mankopy of Denmark with their play "Cake & Consequences" in a project that enlists dancers from Tanzania, Norway's Fricar Dance Company with a performance called "Kruk!" and Finland's Glims and Gloms bring us "A Man Without a Shade in His Soul" Known on their own home turf, these dance companies are as yet unknown in the rest of Europe and rarely perform together: Zawirowania presents a unique opportunity to catch all four troupes at once.
From across the Atlantic, Mexico's Opus Ballet brings us "Aqua", whilst Israel's Yossi Berg & Oded Graf, who have already performed in last year's edition of the festival, return to Poland with "Heroes". The American group Lee Saar shows its "Fame", dedicated to the recently deceased Hollywood actor, Heath Ledger. Other perfomances from Central Europe, Russia, France and Germany, are also set to perform in what is a great exploration of new trends and styles in contemporary dance.
