Remigiusz Brzyk’s The Promised Land is dedicated to the city of Łódź and its overwhelming power described in the novel of the same title by Nobel-winning author Władysław Reymont. To people who pursued their dreams at the expense of those who were not allowed to dream. To citizens of Łódź who allowed the city to devour them. Michał Kmiecik, who adapted the novel for the stage speaks about the performance:
The Promised Land is a story about the birth of a monster. About a nascent city, thriving industry and bloodsucking capitalism. About industrial tycoons and their slaves who came to the city by whole villages looking for work and prosperity. It is not the three young wolves (high-flyers) who want to start a factory that are the most important in Reymont’s novel. The protagonist in Promised Land is the city of Łódź, a growing metropolis of great factories, rising fortunes, extravagant palaces and enormous poverty. A monster that makes a promise of a better life but fails to fulfill it. The performance directed by Remigiusz Brzyk is a story about the last moments of that world.
