The festival takes place between the 21st of August and the 1st of September. Jack Strong, a film by Władysław Pasikowski about about Colonel Ryszard Kukliński, the Cold War Spy and communist whistleblower and Field of Dogs by Lech Majewski are shown out of competition, as part of the international full feature panel.
Closer to the Moon, a Polish, Romanian, Italian and American co-production directed by Nae Caranfil screens in the Focus on World Cinema section. The film tells the incredible, humurous and true story of the Jewish Ioanid Gang who organise a heist on the National Bank of Romania in Bucharest in 1959. The members of the gans were heroes of the resistance during World War II and highly placed members of Romanian society. They clearly knew they would be caught and executed. The film was co-produced by the Polish production house Agresywna Banda. Polish actor Marcin Walewski plays one of the lead roles.
Andrzej Cichocki's short The Shadow Forest was produced at the Faculty of Radio and Television at the University of Silesia in Katowice where the filmmaker studies. The film therefore qualifies for the Student Film Festival section in Montreal. The film shows a sinister scene in a forest where a poacher stands face to face with a wolf. On a hunting trip he hears shots and sees people running. In the chaos a boy gets lost. The camera and music stirs up the feeling of impending danger.
All Polish films presented at the 38th MWFF were co-financed by the Polish Film Institute PISF.
