London Symphony Orchestra performs the two composers' 4th Symphonies under the baton of Valery Gergiev. The year’s last performances in the series on the 18th and 19th of December are broadcast live from the Barbican Hall on Mezzo Live HD, the leading European channel of classical music
This special season is a rare opportunity to hear all four symphonies, as well as other pieces, by 20th century Polish composer Karol Szymanowski, alongside the much more widely recognised works of Brahms by the London Symphony Orchestra.
Szymanowski is little-known even among classical music aficionados, but his music is enormously influential and intensely affecting. In the words of international powerhouse conductor Valery Gergiev, he will bring that 'little bit of spice' to an evening balanced by Brahms' rich, Romantic compositions.
Szymanowski admired Brahms greatly, and this season offers a chance to hear these two strikingly different, yet intriguingly complementary, composers side-by-side.
Every performance promises a complex brew of delights, depths and discoveries. All of the concerts in the series are overseen by Gergiev - one of the world's most celebrated and sought-after conductors
The concert programme on the 18th and 19th of December comprises the two composers’ 4th Symphonies. The London Symphony Orchestra performs under the baton of Valery Gergiev, with Denis Matsuev on piano and Leonidas Kavakos on violin.
