Mateusz Smoczyński Quintet, was formed by Mateusz and Jan Smoczynski brothers 10 years ago. Inspired by jazz masters such as John Coltrane and Zbigniew Seifert, Smoczynski Quintet is listed among the most important names in contemporary European jazz.
Mateusz Smoczynski, a graduate of the Frederic Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw, worked as a student of Andrzej Gebski and made his jazz debut in 1999 in Jazz Camping Kalatowki with the Jacek Namyslowski Quintet. After the success of his first album in 2007 titled Inspirations, Mateusz received the Minister of Culture and National Heritage Scholarship, and in June 2008 was awarded Jazz Oscar in the category Music Lovers’ Hope of 2007. In 2012 Smoczyński joined the legendary San Fransisco-based American band Turtle Island Quartet, which holds two Grammy awards up to date: Best Classical Crossover Album for 4 + Four (2006) and Best Classical Crossover Album for A Love Supreme: The Legacy Of John Coltrane (2008).
