Can you imagine the old Collegium Maximum building in flames, a gigantic "Aquarium" on the facade of the Wilam Horzyc Theatre, an extraordinary "El Sol" installation at the medieval Fosa Zamkowa (Castle moat) - these only a few of the attractions brought to you by the 3rd Skyway International Light Festival
Over the course of five days the public has an opportunity to see 11 light installations which have been prepared by artists from countries such as Belgium, Portugal, Great Britain, Czech Republic, Hungary, Estonia, France and Poland. All events at the festival allude to the classic concept of the four elements: earth, water, fire and air.
"This year, the festival's artistic programme once again triggers the human imagination of a world that is becoming more and more infinite, whilst at the same time - thanks to the help from modern science, astronomy, astrophysics or astrobiology - a world which is a little bit more understandable", explains Mario Caeiro, the Skyway's artistic director.
Skyway 2011: Grupa Epicko
Skyway 2011 begins on the 9th of August at 21:30 with the spectacular show titled "Helios" (Collegium Maximum), that is prepared by the Hungarian Limelight group which use 3D mapping techniques in their work. Another event by the duo Nuno Maya and Carole Purnelle, audiences are invited to participate in an interactive game - known in Toruń from their previous captivating showings upon the facade of the academic church. Further into the festival, we are reminded in a humorous way by the Belgian Het Pakt group about the impossibility of listening to music without air. And not to forget the "El Sol" installation which is made up of illuminated tents creates a virtual musician who awaits the presence of an audience. Here the participants get an opportunity to interact with the mysterious musicians.
In addition, known for his interesting installations that have been shown at numerous international festivals, Xavier de Richemont prepared a fiery spectacle titled "Czerwona ściana" / "Red wall" which is presented at the old Brama Klasztorna (Monastery gate). During Skyway 2011, a number of young Polish artists from Toruń also show their works: Katarzyna Malejka is preparing an ethereal presentation in the presbytery of a non-existent church space (now the ruins of an old Dominican church), and on the original facade of the Teatr Baj Pomorski Grupa Epicko is creating a spectacle inspired by the four elements.
The Skyway festival is also joined by a number of different events:
"As part of a special Projekt Lulu series of concerts, within a unique setting of the Międzymurze Dwór Mieszczański, a number of well known alternative artists perform: Czesław Śpiewa, L.U.C., Fisz and Emade", explains Agnieszka Marecka from the Toruń Cultural Agenda. "Music workshops run by Rochus Austa and Pavla Korbicki take place at the Znaki Czasu Centre for Contemporary Art and the festival artists and academics from the Mikołaj Kopernik University hold discussions on science and about its inspiration on art".
All the installations and projections can be viewed during the course of the festival between 20:30 - 24:00. However, on the first day of the festival (9 August) the presentations begin at 21:30.
